“Hey, you’re pretty funny…for an accountant!”
Some would call that a backward compliment. Others would say it’s a complete misrepresentation of accountants’ personalities, wrongly propagated through years of misguided stereotypes.
You can help right this grievous injustice, and it doesn’t even require a notary.
Each September, Accountants One invites financial professionals from across the Southeast to audition for The Annual Search for the South’s Funniest Accountant, a combination fundraiser/stereotype debunker. The movement to prove that Accountants are Funny Too originated in 2004 and has gained momentum ever since. At this point Funny Accountants have raised over a quarter-million dollars for Junior Achievement!
Your role, should you choose to accept it, is to prepare one minute of comedy material. One minute. You spend longer than that heating your coffee in the break room microwave. It can be original material or borrowed from a professional comedian. That’s right, for the audition, you don’t even have to write your own routine if you don’t care to. You can borrow from Bob Newhart, Sarah Silverman, or Patton Oswalt. Whoever makes you laugh.
Why do we make the audition process so easy and painless? Because it should be! This is a fun event, and our team strives to make every touchpoint along the way low stress. Our auditions are laid back. If you mess up, start over. If you have questions, ask them. If you’re nervous, there’s beer.
All we want to see is your comedic potential. You’re not expected to walk into the auditions as a polished stage-ready stand-up. You’re just supposed to be…you. We have a professional comedy coach who will work with our contestants to help them develop original material and prepare for being at performance level for the big night. We host a trio of free Comedy Boot Camps to prepare each comedian for success. We’ll guide you every step of the way. We promise.
But first, you have to audition. Do it because you’ve been told you’re funny. Do it because you know you’re funny. Do it because someone in the office dared you. Do it because doing one night of stand-up comedy in front of 800 people is on your bucket list. Do it because you believe in the mission of Junior Achievement. Do it because you are tired of hearing jokes ABOUT accountants instead of jokes BY accountants. Do it because you want to win a free trip to Las Vegas (Yes, that’s the grand prize). Just do it.
This is a remarkable experience, and over the span of 13 years, we’ve worked with over 100 novice performers, helping them become comedy rock stars while raising money for a terrific cause. We’d love for you to be a part of it.
